  1. Always use a desktop or a laptop computer when accessing Smashcut for live video meetings. We recommend you use a desktop/laptop for all of your other activities on Smashcut.

  2. Use the Chrome web browser and make sure it's the latest version. You should be able to use any Chromium-based browser such as Brave.

  3. Test your setup to be sure your computer, webcam, and microphone are all working properly and can connect to our video conferencing tools.

Systems checklist:

  • A fast, reliable internet connection. Run a speed test to find out how your network is performing.

  • A laptop or desktop computer with a webcam

  • We highly recommend you plug directly into your router with an ethernet cable. Google your computer model and find out what sort of attachment you need to run the ethernet cord to your computer.

Best Practices:

  • Free up your computer processing power. Smaschut video meetings can demand significant memory and processing power from your computer. Closing other applications will help your video conference run better.

  • Get as close to your wifi router as possible. If you can, plug directly into your router with an ethernet cable.

  • Close out of unneeded open tabs on your Chrome web browser.

  • Save bandwidth by turning off your camera and microphone when you're not actively participating in the class discussion.

  • Avoid activities that will steal bandwidth -- this goes for other people on your wifi network as well. Ask your family or roommates to avoid downloading, online gaming, streaming video (netflix, youtube, hulu), etc. while you're on your video conference.
